Growing Through Understanding

Hello Friends,

July is here–happy 250th birthday to the United States of America! May this month find you embracing a chance to reflect, celebrate, and move forward with conviction and zeal toward a future submitted to God’s purposes and guided by His hand.

At Firm Foundation Family Services the work continues apace and summer has yet bring lazy days (though it indeed has brought some heat!). This afternoon at 4:30pm, July 1, Chia-Hua is hosting another art therapy workshop, Wellness, at our partner venue SimplyBe in downtown Leesburg. We continue to consider when and how to provide therapeutic and educational services of value to our community.

Please keep letting us know if there are topics you want to know about, groups you’d like us to facilitate, or partnerships you think would grow our meaningful service to Loudoun County. We are here to serve you!

BOOK RECOMMENDATION

THERAPY NATION

by Jonathan Alpert

“It’s time to rethink how the public approaches therapy–and how therapists approach the public. The truth is, most people aren’t meant to stay in therapy forever. . . . When therapists fail their patients, the consequences extend beyond the individual–to families, communities, and the wider society.” (p. 5)

Jonathan Alpert, author and practicing psychotherapist, shares his observations about changes in therapy practices over recent decades.

Alpert contends some client symptoms once considered common to everyday life have become pathologized. He also contends some clinicians are practicing in ways that exacerbate client distress rather than remedy it. Alpert’s book is a critical self-assessment of the mental health profession and a decisive call to restore methods that promote healing.

Tips for a stronger marriage

Marriage has a way of inviting husbands and wives to take a look at themselves through the eyes of another. Though our spouse’s insights about us may challenge or even offend us at times, we do well to remember that the “wounds of a friend” are a gift God uses to help us grow. Next time your spouse’s words cause your hackles to rise, ask the Lord to show you the truth in their observation and allow it to prompt you to honest self-reflecton and maturity.

The name of the Lord is a strong fortress;
the godly run to him and are safe.

-Proverbs 18:10

Friends, as summer hits full swing we pray your days are bursting with light and possibility. If the summer routine (or lack of it) brings unwanted stress and you need some added support, we hope you’ll give us a call. It’s our honor to serve you when it comes to your emotional, relational, and spiritual health.

Walking with you,
Carrington
