What’s in a Name?
A business name has the potential to create an impression, convey a message, and distill an identity. In coming up with the name for Firm Foundation Family Services, we considered our core purpose as an organization. Why do we exist? What value do our offerings bring to the community of clients we serve? What do we stand for?
Supporting Healthy Families
Since I started working with parents over ten years ago, my aim has been to encourage and support healthy families. Healthy families protect and nurture children. Healthy families foster adolescents to become mature and responsible adults. Healthy families provide a strong base of support for their members so they have security in connection and the confidence to go forth and be productive in the world.
The foundation of a healthy society is a healthy family. Given this conviction, the inclusion of “family services” in the name reflects our belief that family is the starting point of healthy engagement with others. We support healthy families because we believe healthy families are critical to a healthy world.
The Meaning of “Firm Foundation”
When it came to determining our defining title—the “firm foundation” piece—we considered our core message. Not only do we care to serve families, but we believe the only substantive and effective way to do that is to align ourselves with Biblical truth.
The concept of a firm foundation is a Biblical tenet. Jesus declared that anyone who “hears these words of mine and does them” is like the wise man who built his house on a rock. When the rains came and the winds blew, the man’s house held firm because it was built on solid ground.
Likewise, the one who “hears these words of mine and does not do them” is like the foolish man who built his house upon the sand. When the rains came and floodwaters rose, the man’s house fell into ruin because it’s foundation disintegrated beneath it.
Building Families on Truth
Just like houses, families require firm undergirding structures to sustain growth and withstand the onslaught of life’s challenges. Paul speaks to the critical nature of laying a proper foundation in 1 Corinthians when he states, “no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.” Many psychological theories, research-guided methods, and time-tested interventions may offer explanations or remedies that bring relief for a time, but unless they are rooted in truth as revealed in God’s Word we are chasing after temporal fixes.
Unless we build on the true firm foundation—that is Christ—we exert ourselves to no end. That’s why we have chosen the guiding verse for our business to be Psalm 127:1a: “Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain.” At Firm Foundation Family Services we understand the ultimate source of strength, comfort, wisdom, insight, contentment, and peace is God Himself.
Our Commitment to Your Family
When men and women receive counsel in accordance with the gospel, families are equipped to pursue true health. This process is challenging, painful, and lengthy at times, requiring a great deal of grace and patience. Still, we believe that strong families require firm foundations upon which to build, and we are committed to working with every client toward that end.
